Patti Sollai Thatadhe( Don't disobey your Grandma's words)

Recently I heard a talk on " Love yourself" by Luke Coutinho. It was about the simple lifestyle choices we can make for a healthier and happier YOU. How is this connected to my blog title you ask?

Ironically I wish I had the wisdom to have put my patti's words into a best seller ages ago. The blog is just a summary of what Luke spoke about to what my grandma had told me at some point in my life. The uncanny similarities are listed below.

Disclaimer: There is no fad diet or a magic pill so stop reading if you thought my patti had these insights.

" Intermittent/ Dry " fasting is good.
This basically translates to going on anything between a 12-16 hour fast and doing this at your pace/frequency and will eventually translate to better metabolism and giving your body the time to "build".

Its Ekadasi/Pournami/Shivarathiri/Navarathiri so we should fast and break the fast sensibly. Eventually it translated to 2-3 days in a month based on the festival calendar and it proved to be the detox you required. And furthermore on most days there used to be straight lunch in the morning and no breakfast.

Activity AKA 10,000 steps is sacrosanct
This is the next mantra to ensure we had moderate activity everyday. Since most of us are in sedentary jobs, this is counter intuitive and we need to  ensure we plan our steps everyday
Patti Said...
Go to the temple every evening and ensure you do 3 /9 rounds around the deities. Walk to the market/friend's house and in general WALK. She did walk to our nearby temple till she was 80. I rest my case.

Sleep is IMPORTANT
And what's even more important is having a regular sleep cycle so your body is tuned to it? Same time(as much as you can) every night so it falls into a pattern. This obviously means no binge watching that one last episode of GoT or Downton Abbey
Patti Said...
Early to bed and Early to rise. Maybe that's why most festivals/preparations for the same started early and that eventually means sleeping early and no later than 10 PM.

Super foods are Ghee,Coconut oil,Turmeric and the list can go on
Ensure you have a good dosage to keep your inflammatory diseases in check.
Patti Said..
What are you dieting for? That one spoon of ghee is good for your immunity. Don't say no.
When you were unwell, the one solution was Turmeric/pepper in hot milk and that is known to almost make you better. Actually as much as you cribbed it did do wonders. Those who have the Golden Latte at Starbucks you know what I am talking about

Rest to Recover
You train hard, work hard so rest when your body tells you to. Simple as it sounds, the guilt of undoing a lifetime of inactivity in just this period will want you to skip this simple step.

Don't feel well, I think you should sleep. No going out or to school or in the sun. I'll give you warm water and you will get better. Avoid food if you are not hungry.

Emotional Stability: Investing in relationship
While this is a no brainer in the current digital age, this is probably the most difficult to implement. You may have 1000 Facebook friends but who do you connect with in time of difficulty? Do you have the emotional support when you need it? Have you taken the time to invest in relationships that matter?
Patti said
Not said but probably no one could have done this better. The networks she asked us to build over the years be it with family or neighbors is something that I can't teach my kids. Simple example any festival or celebration, we had to go and invite people personally or at least through a phone call if they weren't in the neighborhood. Personal touch in almost everything.

Stress Levels in Check?
How stressed are you? Do you have coping mechanisms? The 4/7/8 breathing technique is simple and effective and can be practiced even if you aren't stressed. This will help you connect with yourself on a different level. Can't find time for a yoga class? Start with this maybe
Patti said
What stress? In our day we did not even have this so take a deep breath and move on. Time will find you an answer. Almost close?

While this is just a sample and slightly exaggerated but the overall underlying themes for a happy and healthy you is simple but not easy.
