The constant battle between Spinach and Potato
New year 2020 is upon us and like every other year the
standard question that you will encounter in the first couple of weeks when you
meet anyone is “ What is your new year resolution?” Nah I do not believe in it
and this post isn’t about that. This is about probably one the most common
resolutions people seem to make . FAT LOSS. In general the stats I have read
vary between 50-60% of resolutions are typically fitness related. Nope, I am
not giving a solution or a diet or a magic pill to this.

Christmas to NY is typically the holiday season world over
and roughly translates to Binge eating? Maybe ? Picture this you are a Christmas
eve party enjoying your second drink and thinking about reaching out to
that bowl of nachos and cheese. You hear this in the background “ That nachos
look sooo good. Man if I eat that, I need to run a 10 K tomorrow”. Sounds
familiar?
Or NY eve and while you just pick up the desert, you hear”
Oh Man, That’s loaded with sugar and sugar is drugs. No way I will touch it.
But nah my no sugar days start from tomorrow”. Sighhhhhhh
You are reading a book or watching your movie quietly in a holiday post a good lunch. “ Man after that lunch, I have to exercise and walk
for an hour. Else there’s no way I can eat again ”.
“ Why wont you eat that poori ? Fried is it? Its just yummm
and you are on a holiday”
“ Come on. You can have that one drink. Nothing will happen”.
This is broad extrapolation but most conversations around food
is followed with someone making a statement like this or mirroring this. Suddenly spinach and kale are the superheroes while the good old potato is all left out trying to defend itself. Turmeric latte earns you brownie points (ok spinach points) while that gulab jamun is dissected and judged. As much as your relationship with food is
personal there are very few people who get that. Growing up, I am extremely thankful my parents
have never commented on what my sister and I ate. Ghee roast and potato curry any
day please!
Again, my only pain point is the unnecessary need to validate food choices. Please don't mistake this as an article that tells you that "unhealthy" food is the way go. Neither is it about "healthy" food and its merits. Its just about leaving FOOD alone.
It used to annoy me to explain my food choices and I really
think we shouldn't unless someone genuinely wants to know? You want a support system to help you then make it known so
that its easier for your close friends/family to be conscious. But unsolicited gyan is really not warranted unless asked and neither do you need to
comment on what someone’s plate looks like? Easier said than done!
I won’t say I can totally ignore and be zen, but thanks to a
saner balanced husband I can ignore probably 80 percent of it. Validation by
someone on what I eat or exercise is something that is so internal and
personal. Even if you seek that, think twice before you offer it as a free
service? Or even more start ranting about your keto/paleo/macro diet that is
probably irrelevant to someone? I understand the change you are making and hats off, but really is dinner the best time to start your spiel?
On a lighter note what did the poor Brownie or French fry do
to deserve this? If they had a voice, I am sure you can hear them cry!
