Unsung Warriors of Covid 19

I have lost track of time since Covid 19 took over and shifted our lives from its normalcy. I am talking from a position of privilege and this post may resonate with you if you look at it from that angle only. It is  what I experience and I thought its time I write about this topic close to my heart. I cant fathom what the frontline workers are going through and respect is too small a word for the medical community and this post isn’t about that. I don't think I can do justice to their service which is limitless.

To me, the below are the unsung warriors of Covid 19..........

Local grocery store to the roadside vegetable vendor

Irrespective of their supply chain issues you see them working with a smile to deliver food and ensure your needs are met. The roadside/door to door vegetable vendors have started using speakers now so we can hear and go buy what we need. OF course the online versions of these stores have been a huge support system

Swiggy/dunzo/Zomato

A friend joked saying if we have a swiggy or dunzo t-shirt we can roam around the city freely. Imagine that. When Chennai went into complete lockdown with no grocery store being opened, the first reaction was  "Oh ,we have swiggy why bother". Easier to get cooked food any day? Imagine delivering food across the city and to people who are home quarantined too. It deserves our applause and appreciation.

Children

New born to teenagers, all kids who are succumbed to just seeing their family with absolutely no other social interactions. Extremely tough but to me they are so resilient and still look for that positive thing to do everyday. I am bored is not something I hear as much as they have found new ways to cope. Things we took for granted as kids is now non-existent. They still manage to bring a smile to your faces and as unconditional a love you can get in these trying times. ( Pet Mom’s and Dad’s may resonate with this too!)

Helpers

This is a broad category of people who do their everyday jobs be it house help/driving around/cleaning the streets, they are trying to make our lives slightly better. Some of these migrant watchman’s in our area have been stuck here for over 2 years and still manage to smile when you see them.

 OTT platforms and Online Entertainment

Internet has changed the way we have approached this pandemic. Dozens of streaming platforms with enough content to spoil us. Numerous virtual concerts and artists trying to keep it going had made our lives more bearable. Whatever form of entertainment that rocks your boat is available on demand for a price.

Books to Recipes to DIY Online

Everything at the click of a finger. From Banana Bread to Dalgona Coffee to the latest bestseller novel, its all available online for you to consume and cherish. Internet has definitely been working overtime in the background

 Home cooks and bakers

Special shout out to that caterer who delivers meals on time or to that home baker who can send some Baklava over. Small businesses who are trying to keep their kitchen open so you can relax and enjoy a good meal. Truly special on all counts.

Dine-In Experience at home

Special occasion during the lockdown? Every restaurant in the city is trying to improvise and create a new version of their menu delivered at home. You can say they have  a business to run, but in that process they are making our lives easier

Fitness workouts

Health hasn’t taken centerstage like this for a while. This means there are so many trainers and fitness personnel who take time to create content on strength training, yoga, running and whatever else you can do from home or within the four walls. Irrespective of their personal background, they have managed to keep their community motivated

Teachers

Imagine Kindergarten children joining first day of school online. The teachers who have adapted so beautifully to keeping the students engaged. There are so many who aren’t tech savy but have started assigning polls on zoom and creating homework on google classrooms. Schools are learning to adapt in this process and not just mainstream schools but any kind of curricular activity that’s adapted itself to online. Now at the click of a button you can take any class you want right? Music to Dance to Karate its all available online for you to explore.

There are so many such unsung warriors including a majority of the workforce who logs in from home to ensure that the businesses keep running and we can come out of this stronger.

Take  a step back and let me know if you resonated with this? Who is your unsung warrior?

THANK YOU for making this bearable and bringing a smile to our lives.
