To all my girlfriends....
Girlfriends is a broad term I am using for most of the women in my life be it my sister, cousins, aunts to sister-in-laws to friends across different groups. One thing I strongly believe in is in the power of girlfriends and that its highly underrated. If you don't think so, then you are in a good space. Else read on..
This is age agnostic. Our parents or grandmothers have always had that one or more lady in the family who supported them on everything they did. My patti for example had her sister who was her pillar of strength and used to be her go to person. She also had a "bajana mandali" which encouraged a bunch of like minded religious women to meet regularly. No fancy words were used for this group but in hindsight I can imagine how much of "leaning in" used to happen. My mom is a different story as she had the opportunity to work and built a strong network of women around her who she's still in touch with or her school friends (maybe a few) but have stayed in touch all through the years. This is pre-digital era where landlines connected people and the bonds were much stronger. These are just examples close to my heart and the more I grow older, the more strongly I believe that this network of women you create around you forms such a strong ecosystem who's powers are more intangible than ever.
Breakfast, lunch, dinners, girls night, maybe a cup of coffee in the airport or if you can make the time a girls trip. Preferably in person, else even a phone call or whats app will leave you with a smile or sense of reinforcement that taking this time off was worth it. We meet, talk, exchange life philosophies in a non judgmental manner, of course gossip away and always end this with when next?Be it a short or long gap its mostly where we left off and sometimes even random topics. Why is this important that I am actually writing about it? In this fast paced world where we are caught up with just too many things , this small or big network just forms the perfect catalyst to make the routine and mundane more interesting. To the strong believers I am sure you have have read enough studies around how spending time with your girlfriends is such a mood booster and you are more prone to be happy, productive etc. This is true. The "happy" feeling lingers on and translates in your work , home and any other work you are involved in.
Those of you who watch Tamil movies, there's a song in this boys movie which goes
Girlfriend dhaanae boys-in
Boost allavaaa…
Girlfriend illaa vaazhkkai
Waste allavaaa…
Girlfriend venum venum
Seriously think this is very apt and all you need to change is the boys to the girls and the song holds an even more powerful meaning.
Girlfriend dhaanae girls-in
Boost allavaaa…
Girlfriend illaa vaazhkkai
Waste allavaaa…
Girlfriend venum venum
Go on tag your girlfriends, get out and make sure you spend that quality time at least once a month. Trust me, you will not regret it.Personally for all my girl friends reading this, they will be smiling as they know I will bend backwards to make it to that breakfast with one of them. And not just me, they would do it too....
